Understand that, although God may be silent, He is there with you.

If God is silent, maybe He is wanting something from you.

If you stay close to God, live in His will (even if that is giving up your will. Remember, Jesus Christ didn't have to come down from perfection to suffer) will He have a reason to be silent?

I searched a bit about God's silence, and found these verses:

1 Hear my prayer, O LORD;
let my cry for help come to you.

2 Do not hide your face from me
when I am in distress.
Turn your ear to me;
when I call, answer me quickly.

3 For my days vanish like smoke;
my bones burn like glowing embers.

4 My heart is blighted and withered like grass;
I forget to eat my food.

5 Because of my loud groaning
I am reduced to skin and bones.

6 I am like a desert owl,
like an owl among the ruins.

7 I lie awake; I have become
like a bird alone on a roof.

-Psalm 102:1-7 (NIV)

So you see that, someone else has gone through it.

Follow God's will. If He is silent, talk to Him about it. Try to figure out what you are doing or are not doing that would cause Him to not answer you. If you leave God, or are angry with God because of His silence, than maybe that is why He is silent. (That would mean that, you do not have a strong relationship with God)

Hope I helped a bit.
