I haven't noticed this thread until its recent resurrection. I do find it interesting. For me it wasn't an issue of my identity being taken away, it was more of all the painful paperwork you go through!
I had a funny maiden name, changed it in high school to my mothers maiden name ( our Greek name that dies with her.. no sons, no one else with that name). I married into another reeeeeeeally funny name, divorced, went back to my Greek roots, then married again. Yeah a lot of trips to the social security building!

I just remember when I was dating my husband and I mentioned that I wasn't EVER going to change my name again.. the hurtful look in his eye, he looked at me and said "really, you wouldn't change your name if we got married" ? It was then I realized how important it is to a man.
Women know that men will never understand what childbirth or the even the longing to have a child , what that is like. Women, we will never understand why this " little: thing is important to them. We just have to know it is and if we love them so much that we are willing to take the step of marriage why not please them? Is it really that bad to be associated with them by name?

Yes some cultures , I believe the Latino community, the men take the womens in conjunction with their name.... thus why their kids have so many names hehehe.
