Resurrecting a dead thread maybe, but I just put the mod "Phoenix Rising" on this game... Sweat.

All the ships are like cannon in that mod. Made the game worth playing again, though I'll probably still get board of it eventually. The Executor class is king again, 19 kilometers long, and 4000+ turbolasers of carnage! The Sovereign class is in too, relying on it's superlaser crutch of course. Ships seem to be scaled right, Executor class basically fills a whole space combat map. Game balance is done mostly by unit cost now, less dependency on rock-scissors-paper and factions having carbon copies of everything (though there's still a bit of those). Corruption faction is gone, no loss. Hardpoints seem to be gone, sortof. Doesn't seem like you can 'strip' a ship of key weapons and move on without finishing it off anymore. That could get so cheesy with command point limits in big fights. Still some considerable issues, but good for a first release.

Anybody else try this mod?
