Internet protection...
Hey there ya'll, I'm in a bit of a bind. I have been trying to find a decent internet protection software to use that will not only NOT run automatically nor update automatically, but will do a halfway decent job.
I had Norton Internet security on here, and that gave me nothing but headaches. From 3:00-3:30 PM roughly you could hardly even think about using the PC. I got rid of that...
Next I installed Bitdefender, and after I installed that one... I could not post anything here, PM or anything, could not get onto Bitdefenders site, some of the parts sites that I need to be able to go onto for our buisness, and most "public" sites I could not view.
Since then, (today) I have uninstalled all spyware, virus protection software, and both PC's are running faster than ever...
Any ideas on what to try next?

I use Avira Antivir, keeps me pretty well protected, but has kind of an annoying load time on start. For anti spyware I use spybot search and destroy, the best antispyware software bar-none. The only bad thing about spybot is that it also has an annoying load time on boot up if you enable the protection feature, BUT the protection feature is absolutely amazing. I do not experience slow down of any kind, but if you have a slow computer I don't recommend having any protection at all, a lot of protection software has tons of history of previous updates and it can get bulky. I've noticed this while installing on slow computers. On fast computers there's even software like Norton can bog down a fast computer, not so with these two programs I mentioned. If you're also looking for a free firewall that's really good and easy to use go with Zonealarm, the free version. You'd be surprised how many programs ask for internet access, it'll help also stop current viruses and trojans from wanting to get on the internet.

i'm personally a fan of avast but that does start automatically and automatically updates itself, so i suppose if you don't want an alert about the updates you'd just have to turn off your speakers, i assume since you're looking for something specific you can't easily turn off your speakers for some reason?

Actually it was because of the updates and because of it constantly running in the background that They would slow down so much. Since I have removed them, both PC's are running faster than they ever have since we purchaed them.
I am seriously thinking about AVG... thanks everyone.

Make sure to configure it so it doesn't run all the time, you can either set up a different schedule or don't have one at all, and manually scan yourself. At first it does have a schedule and automatic updates, but you can fix it so it doesn't do that.
