collecting books..
sorry i've posted in the wrong thread..hope to delete this one..i need advice though..
Hi! I'm a youth and I'm planning to have a collection of books which I don't have before except from my school books in high school and my amplified bible..hehehe
Before my amplified bible, I already have 3 bibles before which are the king james bible in english and tagalog version, new living translation bible, and a youth bible..I gave them to my uncle and my cousin because they don't have a bible and my mom get the other one because she reads it..I also have a 'Manga Messiah Magazine' a comic book about the life of Jesus based from the Gospel books that was told chapter by chapter which was borrowed to me by someone who's younger than me so I just give it..
As for now, I wanted to have a student bible or a message bible..
I want to collect different kinds of bible in different translations, books of Christian authors, and magazines..that I really like..I also would like to have health books and other books that I really needed for the rest of my life..lol
So, what can you say? What can you advice me as a youth?
Thanks! and God bless you abundantly!

Look at the works of CS Lewis. They would be a worthy addition to your collection. One bible that might help your studies is a 4 in 1 bible. I have one, it has KJV, NIV, Amplified, and NAS. You can also find 2 in 1 bibles that have 2 different versions.
Like I said CS Lewis is very good on alot of the issues we face as Christians. Another author I can recommend is Norman Vincent Peale. His books are all about having a vibrant, enthusiastic faith. You might also want a Strong's exhaustive concordance and a few other reference works. I have a couple of books on manner's and customs of biblical times and they help me to understand some things a little better.

stay away from the Message, its nothing but a poorly written paraphrase that skews the focus of the Bible.
One good study Bible would be this. I actually wouldn't mind getting this for myself sometime. Macarthur is a very wise and Godly man with a lot of great stuff to share.

The exhaustive concordonance is basically an index of every single word in the bible. It shows all words and all places each word occurs. It is a help for deeper knowledge. Most bibles will have some less extensive form of concordonance. But for serious study you will want a strongs exhaustive.

I love concordances!!! They're a huge help! It's like... I remember the verse kinda... but I don't know where it is. This looks like a job for, THE CONCORDANCE!!! yus.
Philip Yancey is also a really good Christian author, look him up. And you may want to look up another one of his older books,"Disappointment With God". It are a really good book.
Some Bible versions I would personally go with; NIV, NASB, NLT, AMP, and NCV(I think it's New Century Version...). Those are among my favorites. Some other ones to get for a good collection would of course include the KJV and the 1611 KJV, for a good laugh and burning, the message, and get the ESV, ASV, and there's one more that I can't remember...
I hope that helps!

Another good book by Yancey is "Where is God when it Hurts." I think I first discovered the theological side of CS Lewis in that book because Yancey references Lewis quite a bit.
Another good resource is www.biblegateway.com . I use it often when I am looking for a passage. esword is another good program to install. I have the cheap program wal mart sells installed on my computer, it has a decent reference set. Though I do wish it had the NIV version. That is what is nice about biblegateway, it has all the versions you could want to search.
There is no end to what you could put on your bookshelf. I have about 3-4 books on how to read and study the bible, something along those lines could be helpful. Confessions by Augustine is on my shelf, but I have only read a few pages into it. There are a lot of classical works that most people ignore, but these works could help deepen your understanding of God or at least Christian history.

Why do you want to collect books? As a Christian, I feel that I'm wasting time unless I'm communicating Jesus or giving people the gospel.
I have academic Christian books because truths and facts don't change.
It is always important to do your interpretations of Biblical passages first before you ever consult commentaries. You want to read what is there before you read something into the text.
Building a bibliography to communicate Jesus, the truth of scripture and the gospel is something that I have done and I'm currently doing but if your interest is somewhere else then I can't help you.

I'm confused... are you saying books are a waste of time?

Some books have a value, other books have an unintended value and others do not.
1Cr 3:12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
1Cr 3:13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
1Cr 3:14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
1Cr 3:15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
