Isn't speculative science an oxymoron?

Not any more than speculative history.

I heard that science is never certain. It's based on a bunch of theories and hypotheses that are constantly being tested against. That's just what I heard, I'm no scientist.

What about this global warming stuff? Do y'all believe in it? I am becoming more and more conservative in my older years, I must admit. But I am starting to agree that global warming doesn't exist. There's that ongoing debate about how it's just the cycles of the Earth's temperature, as in the same reason the ice age happened. And now they're saying 2007 was the coolest year in centuries...even though global warming is going on? come on. My profs at school are always preaching about it, and I'm starting to have to bite my tongue, but I think that's my old set-in-my-ways self coming through. I don't know enough to form an educated opinion either way.

What do y'all think about global warming? Just curious.

Well, that topic is precisely the one that helps to clarify the speculative nature of science the best.

If you look back a number of years, you'll see that there was at one point an outcry about the impending disaster of global cooling. Some years later, it turned into global warming, as scientific research into the cause of global cooling developed further. I wouldn't be surprised to see global warming turn back into global cooling at some point in the near future.

The point is: all science is speculative. Some areas are more so speculative than others. What defines a scientific field as speculative is our ability to observe the subject of study. We can't very well go back 10,000,000 years to see when the earth was created, or if it even existed then, but we can speculate on that date using scientific measures that are constantly changing.

Look at quantum physics, for instance. You can't say quantum physics is anything but speculative. If you do, you probably don't understand it that well... or you do understand it, but you believe that current theories don't contradict one another.

lol. yes... all science depends on 'proof' and 'fact' and hypotheses (when things cannot be definitively proven). Thus the difference between hypothesis, theory, and a law. I just find it amusing that evolution is treated as a 'law' when it cannot be proven, and should actually be a hypothesis not a theory.

Anyhow, I'm definitely a global warming sceptic just like I'm a "world overpopulation" sceptic. That said, I am all in favour of using resources wisely and not raping the world. So... I am keen on seeing if and how this global warming myth improves that.

I agree with the two above. I am skeptical and think its another big business big politics play. If you watch any shows on the Discovery or those types, you will have many shows where scientist have stated this is a natural progression , not a man made. I also think its highly egotistical to think we could possibly have that big of an impact on the world. ALSO being I believe the bible , if global warming is part of God's plan to bring Christ back, then I say bring it on!

Gods will is going to take place with our without our scientist!

Well, for what it's worth John Coleman, the founder of the Weather Channel, has blasted said channel for fostering global warming nonsense and advocates lawsuits against those selling 'carbon credits', which would include Al Gore incidentally.

Now that'd be a trial I'd like to see!

LOL me too! Fraud on a global scale!

Hmmmmm *wonders if he can offset credits against the property he's purchased on Pluto*

I'm sure that the work my little rock men do there quite offset any carbon credits I'm using here...

Anyhow, http://christianforums.com/t6969544-...eationism.html, is a discussion I'm currently (sadly?) involved in. I probably don't argue that coherently all the time, but I do tire of being asked to prove every word I say! *sighs* It seems to be that if someone else said it, it counts, but if I say it... it's somehow less credible. of course... I am stuck 000s of miles from home atm and don't have access to my scientific information...

*wonders at the value of his Master's degree*

*is now really discouraged*

Apparently, not only do I not know what I am talking about at all... I'm apparently a complete moron for even thinking of challenging evolutionary biology.

I guess it comes down to the fact that people will believe what they want to believe.... and naught can sway them otherwise.

Haha, BlueIceDragon...don't sweat it. I stick my foot in my mouth way more than I should, for the exact same reason...being asked to PROVE all of the time. That's another story though.

Anyhooo, Responding to Ryder's poste about the Weather Channel guy. I heard that on Rush Limbaugh the other day. I was soooooo sooo happy to hear that. I hope they're right. Just so I can be right of course...haha. And just for the record, I think Rush can be a little sexist, but I think it comes from lack of empathy rather than lack of understanding. I think in his mind he understands completely. I used to hate him, now I'm old and conservative....I'm right there with him if I'm completely honest...except for his sexism.
