Default 1 John 5:16

Quote:
"If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that." -1 John 5:16
What is that talking about?

I read an article about this:

http://www.gotquestions.org/sin-unto-death.html

the article seems kind of wrong, though. For instance, we are forgiven of our sins instantly, correct? So if we're forgiven, why would God "punish" someone for sinning? I do believe He would intervene to help us to not sin, but not punish.

It doesn't say in Acts 5:1-10 that the people were saved in Christ, just because they were with the church doesn't mean they were saved.

I had always thought it referred to the only sin Jesus ever said would not be forgiven.

Which is?

Matthew 12:22-32 and Mark 3:22-30 (yay for search engines), but I don't know exactly what it means, besides what gotquestions.org is telling me. lol. [STRIKE] But they aren't backing it up with scripture reference[/STRIKE], it says blasphemy and that's it.

Cool, I don't think I ever used the strike out thing, they do use scripture reference, when it says in Mark, "because they said, He has an unclean spirit."

Those verses give a good general idea what it is. But I always hesitate to fully define it, because there is no coming back from it so to speak. Also something I would never personally accuse someone of as that is a definate judgement and I'll leave that up to Christ.

Best way I know of defining it is in the negative, whether or not someone has not done it. With that one if someone is ever worried that they have comitted that sin then you can tell them they haven't. For if they had committed the one sin there is no coming back from, then they wouldn't be worried about it in the first place as repentance is from God (2 Tim 2:25). So if their conscience is bothered about something they did, then that wasn't it.
