Default Ephesians 5

Quote:
8Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
(Ephesians 5)
Paul must not have been a stoic.

Now if only more of my college friends would read it...

What is the appeal in being drunk?

In that passage, Paul was basically saying we should be glad and find joy in our circumstances, regardless of the condition of those circumstances. The saying: Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord..., is describing the outlook of a Christian in Christ Jesus, led by the Holy Spirit. So let those nay-sayers who think we should all be mournful and never enjoy anything be put to shame. Our joy is in Christ, not in the world, so being drunk on wine is obviously excluded from the outset, but the sensation is not the point, which is why being drunk is excluded. It's a condition brought about by something on a higher level; our joy in Christ, which is not simply a joy, but a joy and a hope brought about by trust in our mutual salvation.
